How do warehouse pallet racking suppliers assess the loads your system must carry?

We assess pallet weights, dimensions, storage levels and bay layouts to establish the required beam and upright capacities.

A site survey can inform written proposals and working drawings, so the pallet racking reflects your stock, space and handling requirements.

Pallet racking load assessment begins with the loads each storage position must support, then checks how those loads interact across the complete bay and frame.

The key information includes:

  • Gross pallet weight, including the pallet itself and its contents.
  • Load dimensions, overhang and how evenly the weight sits across each pallet.
  • The number of storage levels and the planned position of each load.
  • Beam spans, bay arrangement and the required clearances for handling equipment.
  • Changes in stock types, pallet weights or storage patterns that may affect future use.

Weight alone does not determine the correct capacity. A concentrated load can affect a beam differently from a distributed load. Pallet dimensions also influence how safely loads sit within each bay.

Suppliers therefore assess beam capacity and upright capacity together. Beams support the stored pallets at each level. Upright frames transfer those loads down to the floor. The complete arrangement must suit the proposed number of levels and the way stock is placed.

The assessment also considers how the system will operate. Forklift access, pallet positioning, aisle arrangements and picking activity can affect the spacing and layout required. A system that carries the stated weight may still be unsuitable if handling access is restricted.

Floor conditions and fixing requirements form part of the site review. The survey can identify relevant constraints, including uneven areas, obstructions and existing building features. These findings help keep the proposed layout practical within the available warehouse space.

We use site meetings and surveys to check the information against the building and planned workflow. We can then prepare a written proposal and working drawings showing the intended arrangement.

Those drawings provide a useful point for checking:

  • Each pallet position and its intended load.
  • The number and spacing of storage levels.
  • Clearances around beams, pallets and handling routes.
  • Access to stock without placing loads outside the planned arrangement.
  • Any areas requiring segregation, protection or changes to the layout.

Tell the supplier about heavier replacement stock, mixed pallet sizes or planned growth before the design is finalised. Changing the use of a bay can alter its required capacity, even when the racking remains in place.

After installation, racking inspections can support continued awareness of damage and changing conditions. Inspections do not replace correct loading practices, clear capacity information or staff following the agreed arrangement.

Spartan Direct Limited has worked with storage systems since 1982. Our consultation, drawings and installation process connects the load information with the working warehouse layout, rather than treating capacity as a standalone figure.

Pallet racking load assessment should leave you with clear design assumptions, not only a maximum figure.

Ask to see how the proposal identifies the load case for each bay, including pallet type, loading pattern, storage level and handling method. This lets you compare suppliers using the basis behind each capacity figure.

If stock becomes heavier or pallet types change, the original assessment may no longer describe the loading arrangement. Record those changes and request a design review before using bays differently.

Our written proposals and working drawings provide a record to check against the planned warehouse operation before pallet racking is ordered and installed.
