What load limits should you check for pallet live racking?

For pallet live racking, check pallet weight, beam capacity, bay capacity, upright capacity and the warehouse floor’s load limit.

We confirm these requirements through a site survey, written proposal and working drawings before installation.

The figures must match the complete pallet live racking arrangement, including stock, pallets, handling equipment, rack components and the supporting floor. A safe capacity is not determined by pallet weight alone.

Check the following details before approving the layout:

  • Actual unit load: Weigh the heaviest complete pallet, including packaging, containers and any unevenly distributed goods. Use the heaviest realistic load rather than an average.
  • Load distribution: Confirm how each pallet bears on the live lanes. Pallet condition, dimensions and orientation affect how the load transfers through the rollers and support beams.
  • Beam pair rating: Check the permitted load for each beam level and its stated configuration. Beam capacity can depend on span, support details and the number of pallets placed across the level.
  • Bay configuration: Add the loads stored throughout the bay, including every live level. The total bay loading must suit the complete frame arrangement, not just one beam level.
  • Upright and frame capacity: Check the vertical frames against the combined loads carried above them. The frame specification must reflect the planned height, level positions and bay arrangement.
  • Floor loading: Confirm that the slab can support the rack loads at each upright position. Consider the building structure, slab condition, joints and any local restrictions before installation.

Forklift activity creates further considerations. Placing pallets into live lanes, removing them and braking near the rack can introduce forces beyond static storage weight. The layout should therefore reflect the handling equipment and working method used at the site.

Clearances also matter. Allow enough room for the pallet, load and forklift to enter the lane without contact. A clearance problem does not increase the rack rating, and impact protection does not make an overloaded structure safe.

Capacity information should remain visible. Keep the approved load information with the pallet live racking. It should identify the relevant arrangement, permitted level loading and any restrictions that apply to the installation. Users then have a clear reference when stock or operating methods change.

Recheck the figures before adding levels, changing beam positions, using different pallets or storing heavier goods. A change that appears minor can alter the load path or the total frame loading. Do not assume existing capacity markings apply to a changed configuration.

Inspect components after impact or visible damage. Bent uprights, distorted beams, damaged rollers, missing locking parts or altered connections require attention before the affected area continues in use. Remove loads where necessary and obtain a suitable assessment of the damaged section.

Our consultation can include a site meeting and survey to record building conditions, stock details, access arrangements and the proposed rack layout. We then use the confirmed information for written proposals and working drawings, so the capacity assumptions are clear before installation.

For projects requiring several stages, we can also coordinate project management from proposal and tender work through installation and final commissioning. That gives you a defined record of the arrangement that the stated load limits relate to.

Check the permitted pallet count and load for each live lane, not only the beam rating. Rollers, supports and lane length must suit the number of pallets accumulated in storage.

Mixed pallet weights can change the loading pattern along a lane. Confirm the approved arrangement before combining different products, pallet types or load weights within one run.

Discuss your pallet live racking load limits

Discuss pallet live racking load limits with us and explain the stock, building and handling requirements for the proposed installation.

We can carry out a no-obligation consultation, site survey and working drawings before you approve the arrangement.
