What pallet information is needed to specify mobile pallet racking?

We need pallet dimensions, loaded weight, pallet type, storage height, handling equipment and access requirements to specify mobile pallet racking.

A site survey can confirm these details alongside floor conditions, aisle requirements and workflow before we prepare written proposals and working drawings.

The most useful information is a representative pallet load profile, not just a nominal pallet description. We use it to assess bay configuration, beam levels, upright capacity and the mobile aisle arrangement. Include typical, maximum and occasional loads where stock varies.

  • Loaded shape: Record the complete load envelope, including overhang, wrapping, protruding goods and uneven stacking. Note whether loads can shift during handling or need restrained storage.
  • Load distribution: State whether weight sits evenly across the pallet or concentrates at particular points. Centre-of-load information matters when goods are dense, irregular or supported by limited pallet boards.
  • Pallet construction: Identify timber, plastic or another pallet format. Add details of entry direction, underside support, feet, runners and bottom boards. These features affect how safely the pallet sits on the beams.
  • Pallet condition: Explain whether pallets are new, reused, repaired or mixed. Broken boards, missing blocks and inconsistent pallet bases can affect storage suitability and operating controls.
  • Stock variation: List the number of pallet formats and the stock associated with each one. Show which products share storage positions and which require dedicated locations.
  • Storage pattern: Set out the quantity held for each product and the number of positions required at peak periods. Identify slow-moving, fast-moving, reserve and picking stock separately.
  • Access frequency: Explain how often each group is stored or retrieved. Include any requirement for direct pallet selection, batch retrieval or stock rotation. These requirements affect the practical value of mobile storage.
  • Handling attachments: Record any clamps, extensions or other attachments used with the handling equipment. Attachments can alter the required clearance and the way operators approach stored loads.

Do not send only the smallest or most common pallet. The proposal should reflect the largest loaded envelope, greatest load concentration and least favourable pallet condition expected in normal use.

For mixed stock, a simple schedule works well. Link each pallet reference to its loaded envelope, mass, pallet construction, storage quantity and handling method. Mark information as typical, maximum or exceptional.

Operational information also matters. Tell us which products need frequent selection, which can remain in reserve and whether access priorities change during the working day. This helps compare a dense mobile arrangement with the access demands of the operation.

Photographs can clarify overhang, unstable stacking and pallet-base differences, but they do not replace measured information. A site meeting and survey can examine the storage area, existing equipment and actual stock conditions.

We can then prepare written proposals and working drawings showing how the recorded pallet information informs the racking arrangement. If the project requires it, we can also manage the work from proposal and tender stage through installation and final commissioning.

Before approving the specification, check that it covers the heaviest intended load, the largest loaded envelope, every pallet format and the required retrieval pattern. Changes after approval may affect the rack arrangement, clearances or handling method, so provide known future stock requirements during consultation.

Pallet loads being measured beside mobile racking bays

Record the source of each pallet datum, stating whether it was measured, weighed or estimated. Mark assumptions and unresolved variations clearly, so the approved specification does not rely on a nominal data sheet.

Before installation, compare the agreed pallet schedule with live stock and handling equipment. Refer any change in load, pallet construction or handling method back for review before using the affected storage positions.
