What safety features should a coil storage system include?

A safe coil storage system should include secure cradles or supports, impact protection, clear handling routes and inspection arrangements matched to coil loads. We assess these points through a site survey and working drawings, so the design reflects your stock, equipment and workflow.

A safe coil storage system needs controlled loading, physical separation, suitable structural capacity and clear operating instructions. These features reduce instability, handling errors and contact between people, vehicles and stored material.

  • Recorded coil data: The design should account for coil mass, diameter, width, core size and material. These details determine the required support arrangement and rated capacity.
  • Visible load information: Capacity notices should identify the maximum permitted load for each storage position. They should remain visible after stock has been placed.
  • Anti-roll control: The system should prevent coils moving from their intended position during placement, removal or normal warehouse activity. Restraint details must suit the coil dimensions and handling method.
  • Handling equipment compatibility: Forklift trucks, cranes and lifting attachments need sufficient capacity and suitable access. The layout should prevent contact between equipment and the storage structure.
  • Pinch-point protection: Coil storage can create trapping zones near supports, vehicle interfaces and access points. Safety barriers or guarding should restrict entry where people could be caught.
  • Floor and structure checks: The supporting slab must accommodate the imposed loads and fixing requirements. The design should also consider wall clearances, columns, doors and other building constraints.
  • Separation controls: Marked pedestrian areas, vehicle zones and storage positions help prevent conflicting movements. Safety barriers can provide additional protection where equipment operates near people or building fabric.
  • Operating instructions: Signs should explain permitted coil positions, handling restrictions, capacity limits and actions for damaged stock. Instructions should be understood before the system enters use.
  • Protection against unauthorised changes: Users should not remove restraints, alter supports or add stock beyond the stated capacity. Any proposed change should be reviewed before use.

Working drawings should show the storage arrangement, equipment clearances, protection measures and relevant load information. This gives installers and warehouse users one clear reference.

Installation quality also matters. Components should match the agreed drawings, fixings should suit the building, and protective equipment should be secured correctly. Final commissioning provides an opportunity to check these points before use.

Spartan Direct brings consultation, site surveys, written proposals, working drawings and installation into one project process. Where required, we can also manage the work through installation and final commissioning.

For an occupied warehouse, include segregation and installation controls within the planning stage. This helps limit exposure to lifting operations, incomplete protection and temporary changes to normal handling arrangements.

The right features depend on the coils, building, handling equipment and workflow. A site-specific assessment is therefore more useful than selecting safety accessories from a standard list.

Inspection records should track the condition of cradles, restraints, fixings, barriers and nearby floor surfaces. Check for impact damage, distortion, loose components or changes to the storage arrangement.

Mark any affected position and prevent further use until a competent review confirms the required action. We can include racking inspections and aftercare within the wider coil storage arrangement, giving you a clear record for ongoing safety checks.
