How should cantilever racking be protected from forklift impact?

Protect cantilever racking from forklift impact with safety barriers, clear vehicle routes and sufficient separation between traffic and stored materials. We can assess the site layout and specify protection that supports safer access without obstructing loading or unloading.

Protect cantilever racking by safeguarding vulnerable uprights, bases and arms, then controlling how trucks approach, load and leave the storage bays.

Forklift impact can damage more than the visible front edge. The forks, mast, load or rear counterweight may strike lower uprights, bracing, base plates or arm supports. Repeated contact can also affect alignment and reduce confidence in the installation.

Protection should therefore be specified around the complete handling movement, not added as an isolated item. We consider:

  • the forklift type and turning movement;
  • the load length, weight and overhang;
  • the height and position of the vulnerable rack components;
  • approach angles at each bay and aisle end;
  • pedestrian movements near loading points;
  • floor conditions and fixing requirements; and
  • visibility when drivers pick up or place stock.

This assessment helps identify where upright guards, end-frame protection, column protection or other safety infrastructure may be appropriate. The selected protection must suit the rack arrangement and leave enough usable access for safe handling.

Protection should not become an obstruction that encourages drivers to approach from the wrong direction. Working drawings can show the relationship between the rack, protection, truck path and stored materials. They also provide a practical reference during installation and later alterations.

Consider the rack ends separately from the loading faces. End frames often face turning movements and passing traffic, while the front of each bay experiences fork and load contact. A single protection detail may not suit both locations.

Loading procedures also affect impact risk. Drivers should approach squarely, keep loads stable and avoid pushing materials into the arms. Long pipes, timber and sheets need controlled positioning because overhang can strike adjacent uprights or protection.

Keep the area around the rack orderly enough for drivers to see the base and the stored load. Remove damaged materials, loose packaging and obstructions that could alter the planned truck movement.

Inspect protection and racking after any suspected contact. Look for bent steel, displaced components, damaged fixings, cracked floors, leaning uprights and altered arm positions. Do not assume protection has absorbed an impact without checking the rack behind it.

Take damaged racking out of use where its condition could affect loading or stability. Record the location and damage, prevent further use, and arrange an assessment before returning the bay to service. Racking inspections provide a structured way to review condition and identify follow-up work.

Spartan Direct can review the site, prepare written proposals and produce working drawings for the protection arrangement. Where required, we can coordinate project management through installation and final commissioning.

The right approach depends on the rack structure, floor, vehicle movements and stock handling method. A site survey gives you a sound basis for comparing protection options without restricting the workflow the racking must support.

Safety barriers and line marking should communicate the same vehicle boundary around cantilever racking. Barriers provide physical separation, while markings show drivers where that boundary begins and which areas must remain clear.

Where pedestrians share the area, workplace segregation should align with the protection layout. This keeps access routes distinct without forcing forklifts closer to rack uprights during loading.
