Blackburns Metals had three divisions under one roof in substantial premises they had occupied on the Birmingham new road for over 40 years. Due to the continued success of the business as a whole it was decided to split up the divisions and relocate them into autonomous premises.
First to move was the plate and coil division. Spartan have been working with Blackburns for a considerable number of years and were instrumental in the original fit out. Over the years things have changed substantially, not least the mechanical handling equipment. When the original racking was installed the heavy duty coils were loaded into the racking via tower cranes, these days heavy duty counterbalance forklifts are used. As a result it was Spartans suggestion to use heavy duty structural steel racking. We pointed out that the initial investment would be far out weighted by the additional longevity of this type of racking with the forklifts being used.
The heavy duty coil racking is designed to carry two 5000 kgs coils per shelf level, with all levels having specially designed coil chocks bolted in place and painted alert orange.
Standard cantilever racking was supplied with bolted adjustable arms to suit the standard sheet material and a bespoke longspan shelving system was designed and installed below the cantilever for the storage of off cut plate.
The whole project was completed on time and budget. The new racking is fantastic, its very well designed and made and suits our requirements perfectly. While using counterbalance forklifts in the original installation we noticed we were getting an unacceptably high level of damage to the racking from the coils and the truck. This racking is far more robust and will last us for many years to come
